Butt Groping At Market

study: "travel notes" Sarajevo Paul Baldessarini

June 30, 2005, 9:50 am "coming home"

a little over an hour we travel to Italy, after a brief visit to this country about ten years ago, was tremendously wounded by an internal conflict that has seen Europe and sit by the window in the most shameful and cynical. At this time, the beautiful green setting that is the side of the road presents a serene view of this environment. Departing from Sarajevo in the direction of Zenica, a former major industrial city, the landscape in some ways recalls some glimpses of the Alpine valleys. Our eyes, however, also frequently cross the white and straight stele of cemeteries, and are there to remind the wounds suffered. In this intense five days in the ground in Bosnia, we had only a taste of this country. Pocitelj, Mostar, Sarajevo and a mountain area have attracted a strong interest in us.

then say that Bosnia is especially nice to see and the hospitality of the people was beyond all expectations. So many in fact were the people I met, and each one has given us something of his experience. Our point of reference was Ifran, a painter of Sarajevo that we met in his splendid house Poticelj, with his wife Miriam and her mother, is slowly rebuilding, stone after stone, since the houses had collapsed under the relentless grenades rained from the sky. In that first contact with him on any one thing stands out. In our first sip coffee Bosnian homemade tells us about his family and how the plot is not the ethnicity that has never scratched, but rather has always been a strong point. "This is Bosnia" reminds us, as to make it clear that diversity is a value if handled with common sense.

..... Just before noon, when the heat already starting to bite, near the market, we notice the presence of street vendors, perhaps improvised, sitting on the sidewalk nearby. After a few moments, we see a scene that seems to come from a movie. A young couple comes up and sits next to the other street vendors. Wears a little sloppy: he early thirties, she a few years younger. She leaves only a glimpse of the face and hands, now sits on the ground, as he begins to lay on the sidewalk several items. Everything seems normal, but the look of her ill that befalls us. Those eyes absent, perhaps carried by most distant wounds. It 's a picture with strong colors, what we are witnessing. We are waiting for them, almost petrified in disbelief for a few minutes. The girl furtively drinking from a bottle that keeps hidden under her dress ........ reluctantly we carry away those cruel images; hardly forgotten what your face and eyes in need of sweetness ......
